Strategic Partnership explores perspectives for German and European ICT companies in Africa

Logo PRANew technologies and innovative solutions will determine the future of our neighbouring continent Africa to a great extent. For German and European digital companies, the advancing digitisation holds enormous potential and new business opportunities. This also applies to products and services in the field of sustainable mobility.
The Digital Africa Strategic Partnership is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and has the goal of developing the digital potentials of Africa and of providing lasting impulses for development together with the private sector. The partnership includes a network of German and European companies that offer products and services in the field of information and communication technologies in Africa. The entire sector is addressed from the innovative start-up to the established large company. The partnership focuses on selected countries such as Ethiopia, Cameroon, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda, which offer a good framework for successful implementation. Nevertheless project proposals for activities in other countries are generally possible.

The network is organized on the basis of expert groups. Already established groups are among others: Education, health, agriculture, energy supply, and good governance (e-governance/e-government). The expert group on logistics has just started its work and is still open to further partners. As a network member, the companies participate in the expert groups. In addition to networking, expert groups will be informed about the funding and financing possibilities within the framework of development cooperation. In addition, companies are developing specific measures (such as joint country studies, product development or acquisition) to make sustainable investments in Africa.

Expert group Logistics: Design the digital future of Africa!
Economic corridors, sustainable mobility, IT-supported import and export solutions – in the logistics expert group, German and European companies are developing innovative solutions for investments in Africa that are compatible with the objectives of German development cooperation with African partner countries. The logistics expert group had its constituent meeting with the first companies in November 2016.
The existing group of experts plans to address the following issues:

  • Development of IT-supported and transparent import and export and delivery processes in selected countries of Africa
  • Review further applications such as raw material logistics
  • Sustainable mobility; (E.g. resource-conserving mobility, electric mobility, e-bicycles in Africa)
  • Verifying the possibilities of digitisation in the context of the LAPSSET corridor

Members can contribute further topics and projects, which are dealt with in working groups.
In close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Association for International Cooperation (GIZ), the expert group on logistics offers space for training, market research and an exchange with national and regional governments, institutions and private actors.
As part of the Network for the Strategic Partnership of Digital Africa, the expert group logistics is integrated into a broad network of companies and development cooperation partners who share their many years of experience and, in part, have a long-standing presence in African partnering countries.
